What Is One-Way ANOVA and When Do You Use It?
One-way ANOVA compares the means of a continuous variable across three or more independent groups — for example, exam scores across three teaching methods, or job satisfaction across four departments. You need one categorical independent variable with at least three levels and one continuous dependent variable, measured on different people in each group.
If you’re only comparing two groups, use the independent samples t-test instead — a one-way ANOVA with two groups gives the same conclusion, just less directly. If you have more than one independent variable, you need two-way ANOVA instead.
Assumptions You Must Check Before Running It in SPSS
- Normality. The dependent variable should be approximately normally distributed within each group.
- Homogeneity of variance. The groups should have similar variances, tested automatically by SPSS with Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances.

How to Run One-Way ANOVA in SPSS (Step by Step)
- Go to Analyze > Compare Means > One-Way ANOVA.
- Move your continuous outcome into the Dependent List.
- Move your grouping variable into the Factor box.
- Click Options, then tick Descriptive and Homogeneity of variance test (this runs Levene’s test).
- Click Post Hoc, then tick both Tukey and Games-Howell — you’ll use whichever one applies once you see the Levene’s result.
- Click Continue, then OK.

The ANOVA table gives you the F-ratio (F = mean square between-groups ÷ mean square within-groups), degrees of freedom (df1 = number of groups − 1; df2 = total N − number of groups), and the p-value in the Sig. column.
Choosing the Right Post-Hoc Test — Tukey HSD vs Games-Howell
This is the step most students get wrong:
- If Levene’s test is not significant (p > .05) → variances are equal → use Tukey HSD.
- If Levene’s test is significant (p ≤ .05) → variances are unequal → use Games-Howell.
Report pairwise comparisons only from the post-hoc table that matches your Levene’s result — ignore the other one.
Effect Size — Partial Eta-Squared
Partial eta-squared (η²) tells you the practical size of the difference: 0.01 is small, 0.06 is medium, 0.14 is large (Cohen’s benchmarks). SPSS reports it if you request Estimates of Effect Size in the Options dialog.

A one-way ANOVA showed a significant effect of teaching method on exam score, F(2, 57) = 5.84, p = .005, η² = .17. Tukey post-hoc comparisons indicated that Method A (M = 82.1, SD = 5.4) scored significantly higher than Method C (M = 75.3, SD = 6.1), p = .004.
